Cosmetic Dentistry

These days we all get exposed to 'reality' shows on TV. I'm sure lots of people have seen the extreme makeover shows.

What I find is that people often can't make the leap of thinking whereby they can seriously consider doing some of these things themselves.

Whenever we meet someone in our personal lives or in business we usually look them in the eye and smile. So what are the first things people notice about us? I already answered that. And if our smile shows discoloured snaggly looking teeth it probably doesn't make a good first impression.

People spend a great deal of money on their personal appearance whether that be fashionable clothing or on their own person through cosmetics, hair care, fitness, whatever. They also spend big bucks to drive the 'right' SUV or decorate their homes to keep up with their friends and neighbours.

Cosmetic medical procedures from Botox to laser eye surgery are not inexpensive but are quite popular.

It surprises me that more people don't consider the huge changes dentists can make to their smile. From simple whitening (I don't like the term 'bleaching'-it sounds nasty) that actually works in our office to full cosmetic restructuring- all is possible.

Some things have a huge impact and when compared to cosmetic surgery are pretty reasonably priced, faster and less painful. Take porcelain laminate veneers for example. In two appointments spaced 10 days apart a persons upper front teeth can be made awfully beautiful. It isn't inexpensive at about $700 per tooth but think of the huge change in someone's self confidence to know they have that smile.

I know people often fear dentistry but some of these cosmetic procedures are no more difficult than having a filling which we have all survived. Compare that to what people are willing to go through for medical cosmetic surgery which is less predictable and often more expensive.

I just wish people would realize these things can be done without too much difficulty, will last longer than the effects of medical surgery and are quite cost effective.

Young people sometimes say they will wait until they are financially more secure and I understand that. The question I would ask is, "Why wait until you are 40 to have a nice smile?"
